From the Families We've Worked With

AT

Ananya Thongchai

Ko Samui, Thailand

"We came to the Story & Memory Workshop not really knowing what to expect. By the end, we had a complete record of my father's early life that none of us had ever heard in full before. The prompt cards were surprisingly effective at drawing out details. The keepsake template is something we will keep for generations."

Peter van der Berg

Expatriate, Ko Samui

"The Records Tidy session was exactly what my wife and I needed. We had documents spread across three countries and no coherent system. Martin worked through everything with us calmly and methodically. The template system is simple enough that we have actually kept it up since."

"The Family Conversation Program took a bit longer than I anticipated to get into, but by the third session it clicked for all of us. My mother, who was initially reluctant, said it was the most useful thing we had done as a family in years. The workbook is clear and not overly technical."

"I live abroad and my parents are in Ko Samui. The Records Tidy service gave us all enormous peace of mind. Siriporn explained the process so clearly before we started. When I flew back for the session I felt like we accomplished more in three hours than in ten years of vague intentions."

Germany / Samui resident

"The Memory Workshop was a gift for my husband's 65th birthday — he didn't know what it was until we sat down. He cried twice. The facilitator handled that with such grace. We left with something we didn't know we were missing. Very grateful."

Nopporn Chaiyakul

Chiang Mai, Thailand

"We travelled from Chiang Mai specifically for the Family Conversation program. Worth the trip. The facilitation was neutral and kept things from becoming heated in the way family money conversations usually do. The ongoing group has also been a useful place to ask follow-up questions."

In Detail

Family Stories

A closer look at how three families approached their different starting points and what changed for them.

Story One · Records Tidy & Inventory Toolkit

The Situation

A retired couple living in Bo Phut had accumulated forty years of papers across four locations — a safety deposit box, a filing cabinet, a folder in their daughter's home in Bangkok, and a storage unit. They had no idea what they had or where everything was.

What Happened

We ran a three-hour Records Tidy session at their home. Using the inventory template, they categorised every document in the house on the day. Their daughter joined remotely for the final hour to understand the system. Within two weeks they had consolidated everything from the other locations.

What Changed

Both the couple and their daughter described a significant drop in background anxiety once the system was in place. The husband said, "I used to avoid thinking about it. Now it's just a tidy folder." The upkeep checklist has been maintained for six months without prompting.

"I didn't realise how much mental space this was taking up until it was gone." — Ko Samui couple, April 2025

Story Two · Family Conversation & Literacy Program

The Situation

Three adult siblings — two based in Thailand and one in Australia — had been putting off a family planning conversation for several years after their father's health declined. Previous attempts without structure ended in frustration. They wanted a way to talk about the future that didn't feel adversarial.

What Happened

We ran the Family Conversation Program across four sessions, with the overseas sibling joining two sessions remotely. The facilitation was explicitly neutral — we had no preferred outcome. Using the workbook, the family worked through basic literacy concepts and then held structured conversations about their own situation at their own pace.

What Changed

The family left with a shared vocabulary and an agreed list of next steps they had generated themselves. They reported that having a facilitator in the room changed the dynamic entirely — nobody felt attacked or ignored. All three siblings described the program as valuable.

"For the first time, we were actually all in the same conversation instead of talking past each other." — Sibling, May 2025

Story Three · Story & Memory Workshop

The Situation

A Thai family wanted to record their grandmother's memories while she was still well and willing. She had lived through a period of significant change and her grandchildren had little knowledge of her early life. The family had no idea how to structure such a conversation.

What Happened

The half-day Memory Workshop brought the grandmother, her daughter, and two grandchildren together. The prompt cards led to conversations that flowed naturally from one story into another. The recording guide helped one grandchild capture the narrative while others listened. The keepsake template was completed on the day.

What Changed

The family now has a written, organised record of the grandmother's life history. The grandchildren said it changed how they understood their own family. The grandmother found the process enjoyable rather than heavy. The keepsake now sits on the family's bookshelf.

"She told us things she had never mentioned before. We didn't want it to end." — Granddaughter, May 2025
